What is DIN?

DIN stands for Director Identification Number. It is a unique 8-digit number assigned by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to every individual who is appointed as a director of an Indian company.

DIN was introduced under Section 153 of the Companies Act, 2013 to create a centralized database of all directors in India.

Why is DIN Important?

  • Unique identity — Each director gets one DIN for life, regardless of how many companies they direct
  • Transparency — Tracks all directorships held by an individual across companies
  • Compliance — Required for all director-related filings with MCA
  • Due diligence — Verify director credentials before partnerships or investments
  • How to Verify a DIN

The MCA portal (mca.gov.in) lets you check the status of a DIN and see the director's name against it. Directors' personal details beyond what MCA publishes are not public.

What Is Linked to a DIN?

  • The director's name
  • The companies in which the person holds or has held a directorship
  • The filings that require a DIN, such as appointment and resignation forms
  • How to Apply for DIN

If you're being appointed as a director, you need to apply for DIN through:

  • SPICe+ form (for new company incorporation)
  • DIR-3 form (for existing companies)
  • The application is processed by MCA and a unique 8-digit DIN is assigned.

Director names and DINs for newly registered companies are included in our MCA data. See MCA Data Pricing.
